As we age, the skin and muscles around the eyes lose elasticity, causing eyelids to droop, sag, or become puffy. Beyond cosmetic concerns, significantly drooping upper eyelids (ptosis) can actually obstruct the upper visual field, affecting daily activities like driving and reading. At Eyecare Optometry of Redondo Beach, we evaluate eyelid conditions and provide consultations and referrals for appropriate rejuvenation treatments.

Common Eyelid Concerns

  • Ptosis (drooping upper eyelid) — Can be age-related, congenital, or caused by nerve or muscle problems. When severe, it can block vision.
  • Dermatochalasis — Excess skin on the upper eyelid that hangs over the lash line, sometimes impairing the upper visual field.
  • Lower eyelid bags — Caused by fat prolapse and skin laxity, creating a tired or aged appearance.
  • Brow ptosis — Drooping of the eyebrow that pushes the upper eyelid down, contributing to a heavy, tired look.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin, fat, or muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Upper blepharoplasty can both improve appearance and restore the visual field when drooping skin is obstructing vision. When medically necessary, it may be covered by insurance.

Non-Surgical Options

For patients not ready for surgery, non-surgical options including neuromodulators (such as Botox) can provide a subtle brow lift and reduce the appearance of crow's feet and forehead lines, creating a more open, refreshed look without downtime.
